Charles Hoffman was one the very first of the modern wave of world class American luthiers who began making guitars in the early 70's. He was James Olson's guitar making mentor (James still uses Charlie Hoffman's 5 piece neck design and a variation of his grand concert body shape).
Today, Charlie is making 7 different models of guitars, and they are the finest instruments he has ever made, largely because he has lightened up all but the dreadnaughts to make them more responsive for fingerstyle, the same change that James Olson effected just before his guitars took off. The result has been a remarkable transformation into a complex, modern voice guitar the equal of any of the finest instruments on the market. John Pearse of John Pearse Strings was one of the most knowledgable guitar tone experts in the world and he discovered Charlie a few years ago and bought several instruments before his untimely death.
Finally, Hoffman guitars are works of art in class of Olson and Ryan with stunning detail, perfectly executed.
