In the early 1970s, George Lowden started making his first guitars. By the 1980s, Lowden set up a fully-fledged factory in Northern Ireland, producing fewer than 1,000 guitars a year but competing at the high end of the market with sector leaders such as U.S. giants Martin, Taylor, and Guild.
George Lowden still makes a small number of guitars each year from aficionados who want an instrument hand-crafted by the man himself. These guitars are highly-prized and currently a two-and-a-half year wait. In addition, they are about $15,000 more than the Lowden guitars built in his shop. These guitars are made under his supervision and still have the same signature sound and quality that his hand-crafted guitars have.
Lowden guitars are handmade in a small shop of about 10 luthiers. Daniel Lowden, George's son, is the Final Assembly Specialist and continues to oversee the quality of the Lowden Guitar Company and he is doing a great job. It must be in the blood!
