Frustration with both the high costs of bluegrass A and F model mandolins and the inferior quality of plywood imports was the spark that created the Mid-Missouri Mandolin Company, Inc, now known as Big Muddy Mandolin Company. Starting with all solid woods, Big Muddy Mandolins are hand-crafted from start to finish. Big Muddy Mandolins are made with solid mahogany, maple and rosewood backs and sides, and solid Sitka spruce soundboards. Adirondack red spruce available at additional charge. This gives Big Muddy Mandolins the rich, warm sound of a solid wood instrument at a fraction of the cost of carved top models.
Big Muddy Mandolins are crafted in the age old tradition of people using hand tools of chisels, rasps, and files. They are made with real woods, all solid and hand selected for each instrument they make. Each instrument is then hand assembled. Big Muddy's approach is totally inefficient - however, they selfishly derive greater satisfaction by caring for each instrument they create. You'll have that same satisfaction through knowing that they're just people making instruments for people who play them.
