It started at the Flatiron Mandolin and Banjo Company in Bozeman Montana. There John Walker worked with Eric Lange in the banjo department. After a couple of years, John transitioned to the Gibson Montana Division, also located in Bozeman. There he learned the art of building flat top acoustic guitars. During John's tenure at Gibson Montana, along with Ren Ferguson, he developed the Custom Shop. It was his privilege to build non-production instruments for artists and special orders. John was also involved in developing new models and tooling. John was noted in the publication "Gibson's Fabulous Flat-Top Guitars", written by Eldon Whitford, David Vinopal and Dan Erlewine as well as the publication "Gibson Guitars, 100 Years of an American Icon" written by Walter Carter.
At the end of 1995 John left Gibson Montana Division and headed to Seattle Washington. While he was proud of his work at Tacoma Guitars, he was most fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Michael Gurian. From Gurian, John learned about a different aspect of the guitar industry as it relates to the manufacture of marquetry, rosettes, bridge and end pins, handmade specialty files, and laser work.
In 2001, John had the opportunity to work with Steve Andersen, known for his fine Arch tops and Mandolins. The years with Steve were an invaluable experience. He is an innovator and a meticulous craftsman that can do it all.
Now, John has begun his own line of instruments, based on what he knows, what he has learned, and what you prefer. John Walker Guitar's goal is to produce fine quality instruments that you will love playing, and he looks forward to working with you to achieve this goal.
