Boutique guitar amplifiers are all the rage.
The tone, the build quality, and the attention to detail are the standards by which these amps are judged, and what sets them apart from their mass produced cousins. Eschewing circuit boards for point-to-point wiring, employing fine cabinet-grade materials and joinery over particle board boxes, and using top notch components like Mercury Magnetics transformers, Weber speakers, and Sprague capacitors; these fine amplifiers help to deliver the very best sound and performance from your quality electric guitar.
Like all things boutique, there is often a catch - the price.
In today's market, boutique amplifiers are fetching prices well above and beyond what well preserved, sought after, vintage amps from the past are even selling for.
Which leads us to Rick Hayes, and his wonderful amplifers being built under the name Vintage Sound.
Built in the tradition of the very best classic American amplifers coming out of California in the 1960s, Rick has taken into account the circuit topologies that Uncle Leo had innovated, and has added his own special touch. Having owned plenty of the vintage amps that Hayes pays homage to, and having plugged into countless others (including the best of the boutique builds) I can say unequivocally -
These amps have it. And then some.
The VS112P is a 12 watt delight - compact enough to be carried in one hand, loud enough to be heard on the gig, and low enough in wattage to be able to run it wide open in the studio. It features an all tube design, including tube reverb and the sweetest tube bias tremolo. Unlike its historic counterpart with a 10" speaker, this amp features a 12" Weber California speaker, sporting a Jensen-esque tone, and a lot more bottom. The hefty Mercury Magnetics transformer coupled with the high efficiency Weber means that the perceived volume of this little wonder is going to surprise even the most skeptical, and it can drive an external cab - and- the internal speaker at the same time, without a problem.
We were so excited by the one that I bought, in fact, that we called Rick on the phone just days after it arrived to see what we had to do to get a couple sent to the store.
They are built as good as the best, and sound SO good! We've plugged in a slew of classic solid body and hollow body guitars, with pickup combinations including single coils, humbuckers, and P-90s - even a National Resophonic with a single coil Lollar pickup - and they all sounded incredible.
They truly have a Vintage Sound, with a boutique build, at an affordable price.
