The origin of the Martin Backpacker
One day in the early 1990s, Chris Martin was perusing the craft booths at the Philadelphia Folk Festival. An unusual guitar designed by luthier Robert McNally caught his eye and ear. Chris felt the instrument had enormous potential, and Martin Guitar entered into a collaboration with Bob McNally to manufacture and distribute these unique instruments. The rest is history.
Few instruments have made the impact Backpackers have made because of their unique portability. Backpackers have traveled to practically every place man has traveled: To the North and South Poles, to the summit of Mount Everest, to the depths of the Grand Canyon and even into outer space aboard the space shuttle Columbia. Backpacker guitars are traveling the world and beyond!
The steel-string and classical Backpacker have evolved into a second generation design that has been refined with improved playability and a more even balance, while still remaining lightweight and portable.
Backpackers play with an easy action and are constructed entirely with solid tonewoods. Both guitar bodies feature a small shoulder, but don't fret, all Backpackers still retain their compact shape. The projection, volume and tonal response are greater than one would expect from a small, compact instrument. Backpackers travel well and sound great while they're doing it!
Try a Backpacker on for size. You can add an optional Martin Thinline 332 Pickup if you like. See if you can take your Backpacker to a place it's never been!
