The D-1 is the least expensive Collings guitars and also one the finest. I've had two of them myself and they were both late 90's models. Like all Collings instruments, they were the best at that time and they have improved them since. The D-1 is very loud and cuts through other instruments, just like they always have, but now they have a little bit smoother, sweeter voice and a little bit looser playing feel.
What players have always liked about D-1's is the great clarity and note separation in a guitar that is very resonant with great sustain. I've always thought that these were one of the best bluegrass guitars made, but I always played fingerstyle on mine. Go figure.
