The D1-A is one of my favorite Collings guitars that I have owned and the new ones seem to be built a liitle lighter. Lighter means richer and easier to play. I've had both the Adirondack top and the sitka top D1's but there were 90's models and to me quite different. Like all Collings instruments, they were the best at that time and they have improved them since. The D-1A is very loud and cuts through other instruments, just like they always have, but now they have a little bit smoother, sweeter voice and a little bit looser playing feel. The Adirondack top adds a musicality to a mahogany guitar that I have grown to love.
What players have always liked about D-1's is the great clarity and note separation in a guitar that is very resonant with great sustain. I've always thought that these were one of the best bluegrass guitars made, but I always played fingerstyle on mine. Go figure.
